While I was serving my time in the marines in California between 1957-1960, I would spend my furloughs in Dulce, New Mexico visiting my father who was employed by the Bureau of Indian affairs. I met his friend Wiley Donaldson who owned a big, friendly appy stud who he called “Frosty”. Not having the time to exercise the horse, Wiley asked me if I could give “ol’ Frosty” a workout. Well, needless to say, after growing up on a ranch in South Dakota and riding my own horses, I jumped at the chance to ride his beautiful stud.

Riding Frosty was a pure pleasure, he seemed to know my next move by just a body shift and his response was instant and surefooted. He loved to be ridden, and loved to race. I never new of an Indian pony he couldn’t beat. Many folks would come onto the reservation looking for “the man with the spotted horse” and challenge him to a race.

When I completed my term in the Marines I moved to Dulce and worked for various ranchers and spent all my spare time on Frosty. I tried to buy Frosty from Wiley, but my $1800 I had after my discharge wasn’t enough and Wiley told me he really didn’t want to part with his horse.

I took leave of Dulce for a two-month visit to my sister’s ranch in South Dakota to check on my horses she was keeping for me while I served my country. When I returned to Dulce I had an extra $1000 to add to my offer for Frosty but was informed by BJ, Wiley’s wife, that Wiley had just sold Frosty to a man named Cecil Dobbins from Colorado Springs for $5000. I was heartbroken to say the least. Well, I guess you all know by now whom the horse is that I am writing about – Bright Eyes Brother!

Cecil fattened up “Frosty”, now Bright Eyes Brother, registered him in the Appaloosa Horse Club and had a Grand National Champion Stallion for many years in a row.

Later, while living in California working in the lumber and building industry I met and married my angel, Sharon. She really was intrigued by my New Mexico and Colorado life. She loved horses since she was a child and always wanting one, she and I vowed that if we ever had the chance, someday, we’d own a Bright Eyes Brother granddaughter and raise our own family of “Frostys”.

Well, our dream, by the love and grace of God, has come true. We’re here on a small horse ranch on Colorado’s Southwest slope and loving the Colorado life. We were lucky enough to find NW Bright Eyes, a granddaughter who has his exact disposition and a great motherly love for her foals. And a mare called NW Shadow’s Celebrity who can stand next to the best when comparing bloodlines and Hall of Fame sires. She has given us another great mare, Lazy J’s Bright Beauty and a two year old stud, Brothers Bright Image – a Great Grandson of Bright Eyes Brother and soon to be our standing stud.

We don’t have all that fancy spit and polish in our paddocks, but we have a bunch of mares and a gelding we’re training that a child can walk up to and pet. They all trim, tie, lead, load and will soon ride, if my old bones get their way.

Now we can introduce “Ima Cool Colour” to our stud lineup. He’s a Great Grandson of Dreamfinder, and he’s fancy and colorful – new blood to add to what we’re already so proud of. This year’s foal and next year’s crop of foals will have a branded Wiescamp quarter horse sire, but after that “Cool” should take over along with Image as our standing studs and sire all our future foals. Things should get mighty interesting around here!

Come see our dream and our little ranch just 18 miles East of Durango above Gem Village and maybe bring your favorite mare along too!
